Amber SPA Boutique Hotel
Sustainability
Alla Sokolova is the host at Amber SPA Boutique Hotel. Her love for travelling, exploring different cultures and their food and lifestyle habits had a big role to play in the creation of this lifestyle project.
The focus is on supporting local produce and the environment, reinventing the SPA and culinary traditions of Jurmala, and building long term relationships with clients. The mission is to expand the understanding of health, and to redefine luxury by providing quality, knowledge, personal service and time.
Alla Sokolova came to Jurmala to set up the International Wellness Centre Balans and the Amber SPA Boutique Hotel, with the intention of staying three months. Three years later she still stays on, still enjoying the nature, the abundance of natural products and the many beautiful corners that are yet to be explored in this attractive place, the delights of which she looks forward to sharing with her guests.
Caring for destination
This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
The main area of focus is the support of local produce and communities, and keeping local traditions alive.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
The hotel's focus on supporting local produce is reflected in:
Hotel:. Gallery space has been created where predominantly works of local artists are displayed. Unique details and products such as Latvian amber and linen will be offered for sale in the lobby area.
Restaurant: The restaurant uses local farmers as suppliers of fresh local meat and fish, seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Wellness Centre: Treatments use the natural resources of the area such as Kemeri Mud, Amber Stones, locally collected herbs, and some seasonally available ingredients such as birch juice.
The hotel supports the environment by encouraging and educating clients on water usage, and saves trees by using less paper and recycling.
The hotel is also a charity representative for LVSA, organising fundraising events to support local communities, under-privileged children and families. The main charity project is the creation of the Balans Marathon in cooperation with the Jurmala Council and Tourism Association. This is a major fundraising project that will contribute to the development of the local community.
The company has a standalone eco-house where they are working on developing an eco-farm. The idea is to create a retreat base where educational children's camps will be organised so they can experience life on a farm, learn how vegetables and fruits grow, learn about fishing and nature. This place will also host yoga retreats, and classes on simple organic cooking.
The company constantly organises educational seminars for members of the general public on different topics like health, family values and work-life balance.
The company also organised a gift collection for Christmas through December 2008, which resulted in more than 100 under-privileged families in the suburbs of Latvia receiving Christmas presents.
